EXTENDING SHEIKH ZAYED BIN SULTAN STREET AT UMM LAFINA ISLAND TO CONNECT AL REEM ISLAND, ABU DHABI, EMIRATES

With the aim to address the concerns about a sustainable development of the capital city caused by population and economic growth, the government launched the Abu Dhabi Development Plan 2030 to improve the infrastructure system in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The second phase (CONTRACT 2) of the project foresees the construction of a 4 km road over water and mangrove areas connecting the southern part of Umm Lafina island with Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street.

Two bridges will be built over the water canals and main intersection to ease the traffic on all direction with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Road. Arch-shaped concrete tiles will be used to improve navigation, preserve the environment, assure the flow of the water and reduce the bad effects on mangroves trees. In the light of the project sustainability, a double number of mangroves will be relocated after project completion in 2020, making the highway between the islands of Umm Lafina and Al Reem cross a mangrove natural reserve.

Main contractor of the project is Messrs. Salini-Impregilo.

FPC Italia got the order for the design, production and testing of spherical steel bearings with special sliding material ISOGLIDE (provided with ETA certification - suitable for high temperature environments till 90°C).

The total quantity of spherical bearings for the two bridges and the ramps is Nos.202, the biggest ones are designed to bear a max vertical load of 65.000kN at ULS. These huge bearings have 2 meters side, weighing more than 9.000kg.

In accordance with international standard and designer’s requirements, the bearings have even been tested at our own ISOLAB laboratory with the presence of independent witnessing body.
